As temperatures drop and we begin spending more time inside, the clutter we barely noticed all summer suddenly becomes much harder to ignore. Fall is the perfect time to clear out the things that have quietly piled up over the summer. But you don’t need to spend an entire weekend reorganizing your house.

I created this list of 30 small fall decluttering projects, and every one can be finished in about 15 minutes or less.

Why Small Decluttering Projects Work

One of the biggest reasons we avoid decluttering is that the project feels too large. “Clean out the garage” can easily consume an entire Saturday. “Sort one garage shelf” feels manageable.

Small projects help you build momentum without turning your home upside down. You can finish one task, enjoy the immediate result, and move on with your day.

The goal isn’t to create a perfectly organized home. It is to make your home easier and more enjoyable to live in.

Entryway and Coat Closet

Start with the area that greets you when you come home.

  • Remove shoes you didn’t wear this summer.
  • Sort jackets and coats and donate anything you no longer wear.
  • Match gloves and mittens and discard the lonely leftovers.
  • Declutter hats, scarves, and umbrellas.
  • Clear the entryway table, bench, or drop zone.

These quick projects also make room for the coats, boots, and cold-weather gear that will soon be making their annual Minnesota comeback.

Kitchen

The kitchen is filled with small areas that can be decluttered quickly.

  • Toss expired food.
  • Declutter reusable shopping bags.
  • Clean out one kitchen junk drawer.
  • Sort travel mugs and water bottles.
  • Match food-storage containers with their lids.
  • Remove expired spices and duplicates.
  • Donate five kitchen gadgets or utensils you never use.

You do not have to empty every kitchen cabinet onto the floor. Choose one contained area and stop when it is finished.

Bathroom and Bedrooms

Bedrooms and bathrooms can easily become storage areas for products and clothing we no longer use.

  • Set aside expired medications for safe disposal.
  • Toss expired makeup, sunscreen, and skincare products.
  • Declutter one bathroom drawer or cabinet shelf.
  • Sort one dresser drawer.
  • Remove five items from your closet that you no longer wear.
  • Repurpose worn towels as cleaning rags.

Removing even a few unused items can make getting ready each morning feel easier.

Living Areas and Office

Focus on the surfaces and piles you see most often.

  • Clear one end table or nightstand.
  • Recycle old magazines, catalogs, and papers.
  • Gather books you won’t read again.
  • Sort one stack of mail or paperwork.
  • Test pens and markers and toss the ones that no longer work.
  • Delete unwanted apps or photos from your phone.

Digital clutter may not take up space on the coffee table, but it can still make life feel more complicated.

Garage, Car, and Seasonal Storage

Fall is the ideal time to tackle a few outdoor and storage areas before winter arrives.

  • Remove trash and unnecessary items from your car.
  • Clear the glove compartment and center console.
  • Sort one garage shelf or small area.
  • Toss broken garden tools and empty containers.
  • Gather summer items you didn’t use and decide what can be donated.
  • Put your donations in the car and drop them off.

That final step matters. A donation pile sitting in the garage for six months is not technically decluttered. It has simply changed addresses.

Try the 15-Minute Rule

Choose one small area and set a timer for 15 minutes. Work only on that area and stop when the timer rings.

You do not need to finish an entire room. You only need to leave one small space better than you found it.

If you are considering a move in the next year or two, these small projects are especially valuable. Decluttering gradually is much easier than trying to make every decision while preparing your home for sale.

And if you are wondering which updates, repairs, or organizing projects would make the biggest difference before selling, I would be happy to walk through your home and help you create a practical plan.
